Kate Silverton is a journalist and broadcaster for the BBC. Born in Waltham Abbey, Essex, she attended West Hatch High School. Silverton graduated from St. Cuthbert’s Society, a college at Durham University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. During high school, she was a junior swimming champion and was also awarded the Queen’s Guide Award. In 2010, Silverton got married to Mike Herron and is now a mother to two children.
During the early stages of her career, Silverton worked at a bank in London. Her journey working for the BBC started when she joined as a trainee and worked on the Look North news. Following this, she went on to become a reporter and presenter at Tyne Tees Television.
From 2005 to 2007, Silverton worked as a presenter and regular relief presenter for BBC News 24 and BBC Breakfast respectively. Silverton was the presenter of the BBC News 8 PM summary, and in 2008, she replaced Sophie Raworth, as the main presenter for BBC News at One whilst Raworth was on maternity leave. Silverton herself took maternity leave in 2011 and returned to BBC News in 2015, after which she was seconded to BBC Radio 4.
Silverton has been part of numerous BBC projects from 2008 to 2012 including the historian Dan Show, RAF Fairford, Big Cat Diary, New Year Live, HMS Belfast and many more.
In 2005, Silverton drew media attention when Philip Hayton, a BBC News 24 co-newsreader, and a person who had worked for BBC for 37 years, resigned, stating “incompatibility” issues with Silverton. After this, several personalities spoke for Silverton stating her as professional, intelligent and lovely.
